Best Way to Transport a Dining Table Without Scratches
There’s something about gathering around a dining table that just feels right. Whether it’s a quiet meal with family or a lively dinner with friends, that shared space matters. You’ve got the food, the people, maybe a bottle of wine and everything feels a little easier when the setup’s right. So when it comes time to move, protecting your table is worth the effort.
Dining tables get scratched, chipped or warped easily if they’re not packed the right way. Here’s how to move yours without ruining the surface or stressing over damage later.
Clean and Clear It
Before you do anything, give the table a proper wipe down. Crumbs, dust or sticky spots can lead to scratches if left behind under wrapping materials. Remove any decorative items, pads or extensions. If your table has a removable leaf, take it out and wrap it separately.
Take It Apart (If You Can)
Detaching the legs makes a big difference. It reduces the chance of breakage and makes moving the table through doors or stairs easier. Turn the table over carefully, use a blanket to protect the surface, and unscrew the legs one by one. Label the hardware and keep it in a zip bag taped under the table top or in your tool kit.
Wrap It Well
Use thick moving blankets or foam padding to cover the entire surface. If you don’t have that, wrap the table in layers: soft blankets first, then bubble wrap. For wooden tables, avoid plastic directly on the surface, as it can trap moisture. Tape the padding securely, but don’t stick tape directly to the table.
Protect the Legs
Wrap each leg separately in bubble wrap or soft cloth, then tape loosely to hold the layers in place. If you’ve removed the legs, you can stack them in a padded box. If they’re staying attached, pad the corners and wrap everything as one piece.
Watch the Edges
Table edges are often the first to get nicked during a move. Add extra padding around corners and sharp edges. Rolled-up towels or foam corner protectors work well. Take your time securing them – rushing this part leads to scratches you’ll notice every time you sit down later.
Use the Right Transport
A padded moving truck is ideal. Place the table upright if possible and secure it to the side of the truck with straps. Avoid laying it flat under heavy boxes. If you’re short on space, stand it on its side, but make sure it’s firmly padded and won’t slide around.
Check the Weather
If you’re moving during wet or humid weather, be extra careful. Moisture and wood don’t mix. Wrap the table in plastic only if it’s going to be exposed to rain briefly and always remove it as soon as you’re inside. Trapped moisture can cause warping.
Take Your Time Unpacking
When you arrive at your new place, don’t rush. Unwrap everything slowly and inspect for damage as you go. Reattach the legs, give it another quick wipe and you’re good to go.
With just a bit of prep, your dining table can survive the move without a single scratch. It’s not about overdoing it, it’s just about being thoughtful. That same table will be ready for many more meals, conversations and good times ahead.
