Your dresser is part of your daily rhythm. You open it, grab what you need, move on with your day. So when you’re preparing for a move, it’s worth thinking about how to take it with you without overcomplicating the process.

One question pops up a lot: should you empty the drawers before moving it? The short answer is – it depends. Here’s how to figure that out and handle your dresser smartly.

Check the Dresser’s Build

Before doing anything, test how sturdy the dresser feels. Open a couple of drawers. Give one side a gentle lift. If it wobbles or creaks, it’s safer to empty it. Even solid wood pieces can struggle with extra weight when being carried. And cheaper materials like particle boards are even more sensitive. When in doubt, play it safe.

When You Can Leave Clothes Inside

If the dresser’s solid and the contents are soft, like T-shirts, socks or linens, you’re probably okay to leave them in. But clear out anything heavy or breakable. Books, candles, framed photos and cords all belong in boxes. Stick to lightweight stuff, and don’t overpack the drawers.

Keep Drawers Closed Securely

Drawers that slide open during a move can cause damage or injury. If you’re keeping stuff inside, secure them properly. Use stretch wrap or moving straps to hold everything in place. Avoid putting tape straight on the wood – it can mess up the finish. A moving blanket or bubble wrap over the whole thing adds a nice buffer, especially in a crowded truck.

Lift It the Right Way

Don’t lift a dresser by its top or by grabbing the drawers. These parts aren’t built for that kind of pressure. If you’ve got a dolly, great – use it. Otherwise, grab from underneath and lift evenly. Take your time through doorways and stairs.

Take It Apart If It Helps

If you have a tall dresser or one with a mirror attached, taking off a few parts might make it way easier to move. If the legs, mirror or other parts detach easily, go for it. Just remember to bag and label any screws or hardware. You’ll thank yourself later when you’re setting it back up.

Prep the Route

Don’t forget to check the spaces it needs to move through. Measure doorways if needed. Clear the floor, move rugs and make space around corners. If there are tight areas, pad the walls with cardboard or blankets so you don’t scuff anything on the way out.

If You’re Unsure, Empty It

If the idea of leaving stuff inside feels risky, trust that instinct. Packing drawers into a box might feel like extra work, but it usually makes lifting easier and prevents unexpected problems.

You don’t always have to empty a dresser completely. But knowing when you can get away with it and doing it the right way keeps things smoother and safer. Handle it with care, and it’ll be back in your space, ready to go like nothing ever happened.
