Moving kitchen appliances is one of those tasks people often underestimate until moving day arrives. Packing up clothes and books feels straightforward, but appliances require more time, preparation and care. They’re heavy, often awkward to handle and can easily be damaged if not moved correctly.

The process starts well before the movers show up. Small appliances should be tackled first. Think about coffee makers, toasters, blenders and mixers. Each of these should be unplugged and cleaned a few days ahead of time. Any leftover crumbs, grease or liquid can cause damage or create odors during the move. Dry them fully, then secure cords with twist ties. If you’ve kept the original boxes, that’s the best option, but most people haven’t. In that case, use sturdy boxes with bubble wrap or towels as padding. Place heavier appliances at the bottom and lighter ones on top to avoid crushing.

Larger appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers and stoves require more planning. Refrigerators should be unplugged at least 24 hours in advance to give them time to defrost. Wipe them down, remove shelves and drawers and pack those parts separately. Leaving the door open until the last minute prevents mold and odors from forming. Dishwashers and washing machines need their hoses drained and dried. Secure them with tape so they don’t leak during transport.

Ovens and stoves can be tricky, especially if they’re gas-powered. Unless you’re experienced, it’s best to let a professional disconnect and reconnect them. Microwaves are easier, but don’t forget to remove and wrap the glass turntable inside, since it’s one of the most common items to break in a move.

On moving day, safety and stability are key. Never move a refrigerator or freezer on its side if you can avoid it. Tilting can cause oil to leak into the compressor and damage the unit. Use moving straps or a dolly with a secure base to keep everything steady. Wrap larger appliances in moving blankets to prevent scratches on both the appliances and the walls of your home.

Once at the new place, don’t rush to plug appliances back in. Refrigerators should remain upright for at least four to six hours before being restarted. This allows any displaced fluids to settle back in place. For dishwashers and washing machines, check that the hoses are connected tightly to avoid leaks.

It’s easy to overlook these steps, but skipping them can lead to broken appliances or costly repairs. Preparing early, cleaning thoroughly and handling everything with care makes moving kitchen appliances far less stressful.
