How to Pack Your Closet: Clothing, Shoes and Accessories
Closets can be overwhelming when itâs time to move. Clothes you havenât worn in years sit next to daily staples, shoes pile up at the bottom and accessories get tangled or lost. Without a plan, packing a closet can take days. But with some smart choices, you can save time, space and stress.
Sort before you pack
Start by pulling everything out of your closet. It sounds messy, but it forces you to look at what you actually own. Make three piles: keep, donate, toss. Be honest. If you havenât worn it in two years, it probably doesnât need to move with you.
Pack hanging clothes efficiently
Wardrobe boxes are the easiest way to move clothes on hangers. They keep everything upright and wrinkle-free. If you donât want to buy them, a cheaper option is to group clothes on hangers, wrap them in large trash bags and tie the top around the hangers. That way, you can lift an entire section straight into the new closet.
Fold and protect folded items
For folded clothes like jeans, t-shirts or sweaters, suitcases work better than boxes. Rolling clothes saves space and reduces wrinkles. If you use boxes, line them with clean paper and label them by type – âwinter sweatersâ or âgym clothesâ, so you donât have to dig through everything later.
Shoes need special care
Shoes thrown into one box often arrive scuffed or bent. If you still have shoe boxes, use them. If not, wrap each pair in packing paper and stuff the toes with socks to help them keep their shape. Pack heavier shoes like boots at the bottom and lighter pairs on top.
Donât forget accessories
Jewelry, belts, hats and scarves need attention too. Jewelry should be packed in small boxes or organizers, with necklaces separated to prevent tangling. Hats can be stuffed with paper to keep their shape. Scarves and belts roll nicely and can be tucked into drawers or boxes with clothing
Seasonal strategy
If youâre moving off-season, pack out-of-season clothes first. That way, youâll have easy access to what you actually need right away. For example, if youâre moving in summer, you donât need to unpack your winter coats immediately.
Essentials bag
Always keep a small bag with essentials for the first week. Include a few outfits, shoes you wear daily and any accessories you use often. That way, even if unpacking takes longer than expected, you wonât feel like youâre living out of boxes.
A little planning saves hours when tackling a closet. Breaking it down by categories and protecting each type of item helps everything arrive in good shape and makes settling in quicker.
