Moving a pool table isn’t just about muscle. It’s about strategy. A lot of people don’t realize just how complex these pieces are until it’s too late. We’ve seen torn felt, cracked slates and bent legs from rushed moves or trying to haul it in one piece.

First off, don’t try to move it as-is. Disassembling is the only way to do this right. Start by removing the pockets, rails, felt and then the slate. The slate pieces are usually very heavy – some weigh over 150 pounds each, so be ready with the right help. Label all the screws and store them in small bags so reassembly isn’t a headache later.

It’s a good idea to take photos during each step. When it’s time to put it back together, having a visual reference helps. Even if you’re familiar with how it’s built, things like rail orientation and pocket placement can be easy to mess up if you’re relying on memory alone.

Wrap each part with moving blankets, especially the slate sections. One bump or corner drop could cause a crack that ruins the play surface. You don’t want to discover a damaged piece only after setting it up again. Use foam sheets or heavy cardboard in between pieces if stacking them and keep slate pieces flat at all times. Never lean them on their side or upright against a wall – they’re strong in play, but fragile under pressure.

The felt needs extra care. You can remove it carefully to reuse it or plan to replace it entirely. In most cases, a new felt is the better choice unless you know how to re-stretch it properly. Old felt is often worn and may not sit flat again, especially after being peeled off. If you’re unsure, removing it gently and replacing it later is the safer route.

Transport everything flat and secure. This isn’t the time for quick stacking. Slate sections should be laid flat in the truck, preferably cushioned between soft furniture pads or foam. Frame parts and rails can go on top or alongside, as long as they’re cushioned and strapped in.

When loading into the truck, use tie-down straps to keep everything from shifting. Don’t stack anything heavy on top of the table parts and make sure the legs and frame components are also wrapped to avoid scratches or dents. It’s tempting to fill in space with other furniture or boxes, but it’s better to leave some room and keep the table parts isolated if possible.

Once you’re at the new location, take your time reassembling. A level surface is critical, so don’t skip rebalancing the slate. This is where a professional touch can help if you’re unsure about leveling. Some movers will get the slate into place but won’t re-level the table unless asked.

Place the frame and attach the legs first. Use a level to check the base before adding the slate. Even small differences can impact gameplay. Once the slate pieces are down, use beeswax or a special filler to smooth the seams. After that, you’ll either re-stretch the old felt or apply new felt and reattach the rails.

If you’ve never done this part before, it may be worth hiring a pool table technician just for reassembly. Proper leveling and felt application make a huge difference in how the table plays. A rushed job here means balls won’t roll straight and it can lead to long-term warping.

Finally, once everything’s set up, test it. Roll a ball gently across the table in different directions. If it veers or slows unexpectedly, you may need to adjust. Don’t be surprised if it takes an hour or two to get everything just right.

Other tips that help:

  • Keep all screws and hardware grouped by part and label them clearly.
  • Use gloves when handling slate to improve grip and reduce the chance of slipping.
  • If you’re unsure whether a doorway or staircase can handle the table parts, measure ahead.
  • Have extra hands ready. Pool table parts are long, heavy and not easy to balance alone.

Moving a pool table properly takes time, but doing it right means you won’t be paying for repairs or replacements later. A few extra hours during the move can save you hundreds or more down the line.
