When it comes to moving, jewelry is one of those categories people underestimate. It looks small, it seems easy to handle, but once moving day comes you realize how tricky it actually is. Necklaces knot into impossible tangles, earring backs disappear and the stress of worrying about valuable pieces adds another layer to an already busy process. Unlike clothes or dishes, jewelry needs special attention. If you take a little extra time before moving, you can avoid those frustrating unpacking moments and keep everything safe. Start With a Clear Sorting Session Lay everything out in one place - a dining table works best and group your jewelry by type. Necklaces in one section, earrings in another, bracelets, rings, watches and so on. This not only shows you what you have, but it’s also the perfect chance to do a quick audit. Broken clasps? Tangled chains you’ve been ignoring? Pieces you haven’t worn in years? Handle them now. Moving is a natural moment to downsize. Donate costume jewelry you don’t use or give it to friends. The fewer items you pack, the easier it will be. Protecting Necklaces From Tangles Necklaces are the number-one problem during a move. They twist and knot faster than almost anything else. A few household tricks can save you time: Straws for thin chains: Thread each necklace through a drinking straw, then clasp it. The straw keeps the chain straight. Plastic wrap method: Lay necklaces flat on a sheet of plastic wrap, fold it over and press around each piece. They’ll stay separate without bulk. Small zip bags: Place one necklace per bag, clasping it so it doesn’t move around. If you own chunky or statement necklaces, wrap them individually in tissue or soft cloth to avoid scratches Keeping Earrings Together Losing one earring is enough to make the other useless, so it’s important to keep pairs intact. Here are a few reliable methods: Cardboard or foam sheets: Poke the earrings through, secure with backs and place the sheet in a small box. Pill organizers: Each compartment holds a pair of earrings and the clear lid makes them easy to identify. Button trick: For studs or small hoops, slide each pair through an old button hole and attach the back. It keeps them together in a compact way. Rings and Bracelets Rings are sturdy, but they can scratch or slide around if tossed together. Ideally, use a ring box or jewelry roll. If that’s not available, wrap each ring in a bit of tissue and store them in a small tin or hard-sided container. For bracelets, especially bangles, keep them grouped with soft ties or wrap them in cloth before placing them in a pouch. Watches and Delicate Pieces Watches should be wrapped separately to avoid scratches. If you have the original cases, use them. Otherwise, wrap each watch in a microfiber cloth. For particularly delicate or sentimental pieces, consider travel jewelry rolls, which are padded and designed for safe transport. Keep Valuables With You Even if you trust your movers, jewelry is one category you should always transport personally. Pack your most valuable or sentimental items into a small bag you carry yourself. Movers can handle furniture and boxes, but jewelry is too small and too personal to risk. If you have insurance, check the coverage beforehand so you know what’s protected in transit. How to Pack Everything Together Once your smaller items are separated and wrapped, place them into a slightly larger container. A small plastic bin or a padded box works well. Line it with cloth, bubble wrap or even a towel to cushion it. Avoid overstuffing; the pressure could damage delicate pieces. When sealing, avoid writing “jewelry” on the outside. Use discreet labels like “bedroom drawer” or “accessories” to keep things secure. Unpacking Without Stress When you arrive, don’t rush through jewelry unpacking. Give yourself space and time. Unpack one type at a time and place items directly into your new storage - whether that’s a jewelry box, drawer organizer or wall-mounted display. This is also the perfect time to reset how you organize your collection. Many people realize moving was the push they needed to create a storage system that actually works. Extra Tips for Peace of Mind Photograph your jewelry: Before packing, take photos. In the rare case of loss, photos help with claims or even just remembering what you had. Use travel cases for everyday pieces: If you wear the same few rings, earrings or necklaces daily, keep them separate in a travel pouch so you don’t have to dig for them after the move. Temperature control: Keep in mind that some materials (pearls, certain metals) don’t handle extreme heat or cold well. Jewelry may not take up much space in a moving truck, but the frustration of dealing with tangled chains or missing pieces can outweigh the effort of moving a whole couch. Spending just a couple of hours to pack it carefully saves you time, money and stress later. With the right prep, you’ll open your boxes in your new home and find every piece intact, ready to wear without fuss.
